The Voyage Begins
The start of a new voyage
Where to start?
I am starting this newsletter to regularly share up-to-date information about developments in the World of AI and how it impacts on everyday life and business.
The pace of change has been significant over the last few years, and as we have again seen over the last few weeks, the rate of change is not linear but exponential. Keeping up with all that is happening is challenging, when new tools, hacks and software are appearing every day. Some are interesting, but others are significant in terms of their impact.
My hope is to provide an easy to digest regular summary of the news, that will keep you informed of developments, whilst also occasionally offering my views on where things may be heading next.
Big Sharks vs. small fish
For those of us interested in becoming involved commercially in this subject, the challenge is the fact that whilst there are lots of opportunities, the really big ones are (or will be) quickly monopololised by the Big Sharks - these are the dominant players, such as OpenAI, Google, Meta, etc.
There have been lots of excellent middleware tools developed over the last few years, that clearly filled a gap in the market place, but if they are too universal then eventually the Big Sharks simply copy the idea and integrate those useful features and tools into their own platforms. Every major update and release from the Big Sharks effectively kills of hundreds of small start-ups in one big bite!!
Yet, despite this there is still room for small, nimble fish to survive and prosper in this complex ocean. In fact, you don’t have to even develop software or tools yourself. Whilst most people and businesses are aware of the possibilities of AI, the majority don’t have the time or bandwidth to effectively master the various tools, even though by doing so they would save themselves and their businesses time, money and effort.
The Voyage Begins
So, starting this week, I hope to publish short informative updates on what’s happening with regards to AI, along with some thoughts and views on where things might head next. My primary aim though is to provide practical advice on how use these new tools.
As the quote says “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn”
Hopefully you’ll become involved and join me on this voyage of discovery, and we can explore and learn things together.
Regards
Tom Carter
